How to Save Money when Moving to FL
Posted by TPS on 04/24/09 in Travel
People who are looking to move to Florida right now are going to want to save as much money as they can on their cost of living. Luckily that’s actually fairly easy to do in this state.
Here are some tips for saving money on a relocation to Florida:
- Live in one of the more affordable cities. Living outside of the main cities is sometimes cheaper than living right inside of them.
- Look for housing in up-and-coming neighborhoods. There are a lot of places in development throughout Florida right now so look to move into one of those spots.
- Get new health insurance in FL. Health insurance rates are really good (especially the rates on Ft. Lauderdale health insurance) so you could save money by switching from your current plan when you move.
- Make the switch to a greener car. Most places in Florida don’t have great public transportation so you’re going to be driving here. Make the move to a greener car to save money on gas in the long run. Of course, a bike would be even cheaper.
- Buy local. Florida has great deals for locals on everything from groceries to swimming lessons. Now that you’re going to be living there, try to get those deals.
It’s fairly easy to live cheaply in Florida. Make friends when you move and ask them how they’re getting by.

Buying local isn’t always cheaper. About the only thing you save money on is gas in some cases. While buying local puts more money into the economy, sometimes going out of town will save you more money.

Is there such a thing as an affordable city in Florida? I hear that the cost of living down there is very high overall, regardless of where you live. Is that true?

Of course, you could just verify whether or not your health insurance you currently have will transfer. If you coverage is solid and will transfer, then why get new coverage.

Getting a bike is beneficial in multiple ways. Besides being “green”, riding a bike is great exercise. More exercise can lead to weight loss, and an overall better quality of life.

It really depends on what it is that you are buying whether it is better to buy local or not. If you buy in quantity or bulk, you can probably do better by not buying local.

Check out all of your options on areas such as certain utilities. Some areas, such as cable or internet have a lot of companies competing in some areas. Sometimes you can find a real bargain.

Make sure that you do not sacrifice quality when saving money. If you buy a cheap product that lasts half as long, then you are not really saving money. In fact, you will wind up spending more over time. Be careful.
