Most of us have tons of tech toys hanging around our homes. Even people who aren’t in love with gadgets are likely to have cell phones and advanced televisions and computer equipment. Those people who do love gadgets tend to think that their technology really makes them happy. But is that actually true?

When pressed to look closely at the technology that they have, most people will say that there are other material things that make them happier. For example, people who have home bars with advanced cocktail mixing gadgets will often acknowledge that they are happier with good alcohol or the decor of the bar than with those machines. Likewise, people who love the modern television system and entertainment center in their bedrooms will usually not deny that the beds themselves or even just great bedding make them happier than the technology on a daily basis.

This isn’t to say that our tech toys are unimportant. We can certainly appreciate the fun they add to our lives as well as the convenience that they sometimes afford us. But we shouldn’t mistake that appreciation for happiness when there are probably a lot of other things that are making us happy.
