Is Warfare The Mother Of Invention?

In modern warfare it is simply amazing how the weapon makers are constantly coming up with newer and better ideas. Fifty years ago the idea of smart bombs and stealth aircraft would have been inconceivable to the average person. And imagine the top secret stuff they are working on (or have) now!

But this whole idea of coming up with new and better weapons is really nothing new. Even if we go back to ancient times we see that weapons were constantly being created and evolving. And it would have been just as mind boggling for people seeing medieval weapons for the first time then as it is for us now when we see things like laser guided bombs.

What do you suppose the people in the ancient castles thought the first time they saw a catapult being rolled towards them by their enemies? They probably were saying “What the heck is that?” And how were they supposed to prepare a defense against something when they had no idea what it was going to do? Inventiveness is nothing new. And on the battlefield there is certainly good cause to build the proverbial better mousetrap. After all, he who has the best weapons will be the victor. And to the victors go the spoils.
