My ex-spouse was a troubled sort. Being a musician, she had long time addictions to both drugs and alcohol. Her dependencies started long before we met, and had I been less in love with her, I might have recognized her condition sooner.

As it were, prior to our getting married, my ex had already spent time in a Florida drug treatment center. This came shortly after she had graduated college in the mid-west. As I found out later, she had actually spent time in a facility close to home right out of high school.

I met her a number of years after college, when socially participating in “recreational” drug use was just a part of the crowd we both ran with. During this time we fell in love. Unfortunately, one of us soon realized that her problems were much bigger than she, and would require her to seek Alcohol treatment centers in Florida.

The time after she was released was some of the best we had spent together. I still recall her telling me her recovery in Florida facilities were the best she’d been involved with or had heard about through her friends and colleagues.

I just wish after we were both clear minded that our hearts would have felt the same towards each other.
