At what point do you give up?  I’ve been unemployed for three months, which doesn’t sound harsh, but it really is on my bank account, and before that, I was working at another brutal job I didn’t care about.  So really, when do I give up?  My bank account thinks that right about now would be a good time to cash in, pick up that job I know is available to me in a telesales consulting firm.  It would be the necessary amount of detached and unconcerned; I could do my work and do it well without really getting mentally involved.  I could come home and write to my heart’s content.  However, is it too much to ask for that once, just once, things just work out for me?  Not that other people don’t have problems too, and not that I didn’t, in a lot of ways, choose this, but I just want the universe to pat me on the back and say, “You don’t have to be a part of inside sales outsourcing.  You just don’t.  Ignore the outsourcing insurance sales position; something is about to come along that will make you a famous writer.”  Like if I just hold on, I could be living the life of Riley, the life I always dreamed I should be living.  Somehow, I don’t think that will happen.

If you are either a professional or an amateur photographer, Halloween offers plenty of opportunities for a holiday boost in business.  People love having their portraits taken, so you could easily run Halloween package specials to invite people to get their pictures done around Halloween.

For instance, I think there would be a number of parents who would love to have their babies’ photos taken in baby Halloween costumes.  The costumes made for babies and toddlers are just so cute, and of course what parent doesn’t want to remember forever their baby’s first Halloween?

You might also do group or family photos of people dressed in their Halloween costumes.  Couples costumes would make for great photos, whether for the photo album or scrapbook, or to frame and display.  You never know — you might even end up doing some risque photographs of people in their sexy costumes!

If I were a professional or even an amateur photographer, October would be an exciting time for me.  Not only are the fall colors fantastic for photography, but Halloween costumes would make the normal portrait session so much more interesting!

Do you remember that time as a kid when everything was about whether boys or girls were better? 

I think it started for me when I was in second or third grade and ended after middle school.  It’s that magical time when nobody has quite developed mentally or physically, so all those advantages guys typically have at sports after puberty aren’t there yet.

Every so often, apparently, adults regress back to their childhoods and the gender wars flare up again.  For instance, the other day, my girlfriend asked why my friends and I never invited the girls on our fly fishing in Georgia.  Without thinking, I said something to the effect of fishing being a guy thing.  I meant girls usually don’t like it, but she assumed I meant that women couldn’t fish, and well, I think it’s pretty obvious where it went from there.  Eventually she challenged me to a contest: who could catch the most fish on a trip.

Well, I can’t back down from a challenge, so I accepted.  I told her we were going fly fishing in north Georgia in three weeks, and I wouldn’t be helping her learn.

For the next three weeks I didn’t see her without some sort of Georgia fly fishing guide in front of her face, and when I went on our computer, I even came across blogs about fly fishing trips she’d been reading.  It was actually kind of amusing, considering I knew that all the reading in the world couldn’t make the fish come to you.
