A Different Approach For My Interns
Posted by Trueps on 01/28/09 in Internet
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t really know exactly how the internet works. This is especially true when it comes to search engine rankings and the differences between things like spam and targeted email lists or opt in lists. But since part of my job is to be in charge of my entire departments marketing, sometimes I have to wing it.
Fortunately, as a city department we have access to the city’s IT guy. He helps out a lot, but when he gets to talking about all of this stuff sometimes it is like he is speaking French or something. He’ll start rambling on about the importance of one way linking and algorithms and such. And that is usually when my head explodes.
So this semester when I was interviewing students to determine which ones would be the best fit to do internships here, I decided to change it up a bit. I allowed a few computer sciences students to come in for a sit down. Then I chose one to take one of our internship positions, and right away I knew I had done something right. Talk about taking the ball and running with it! I’m pretty proud of myself for looking outside of the box on this one.
