Do you remember that time as a kid when everything was about whether boys or girls were better? 

I think it started for me when I was in second or third grade and ended after middle school.  It’s that magical time when nobody has quite developed mentally or physically, so all those advantages guys typically have at sports after puberty aren’t there yet.

Every so often, apparently, adults regress back to their childhoods and the gender wars flare up again.  For instance, the other day, my girlfriend asked why my friends and I never invited the girls on our fly fishing in Georgia.  Without thinking, I said something to the effect of fishing being a guy thing.  I meant girls usually don’t like it, but she assumed I meant that women couldn’t fish, and well, I think it’s pretty obvious where it went from there.  Eventually she challenged me to a contest: who could catch the most fish on a trip.

Well, I can’t back down from a challenge, so I accepted.  I told her we were going fly fishing in north Georgia in three weeks, and I wouldn’t be helping her learn.

For the next three weeks I didn’t see her without some sort of Georgia fly fishing guide in front of her face, and when I went on our computer, I even came across blogs about fly fishing trips she’d been reading.  It was actually kind of amusing, considering I knew that all the reading in the world couldn’t make the fish come to you.
