Get Your Legs At The Renaissance Festival

Have you ever been to the Renaissance Festival in Larkspur, Colorado?  It’s really a neat thing-they have Renaissance Festivals throughout the United States, but this one is truly in a beautiful setting.

The buildings are permanent; sort of medieval village-looking design that’s really colorful and that house shops, shows and food.  And the food!  The proverbial turkey legs are there, cooked in an outdoor kitchen.  Matter of fact, they have these huge outdoor barbecues with drop in grills that I’m sure they bring in year after year so they don’t have to suffer the weather when the place sits unused for 10 months a year.

And our small town is inundated not only by the crowds but also by the “Rennies,” who look for all the world like carnival workers teleported here from Woodstock in the sixties.  They walk the roads and smoke in the park, but are generally unimposing.  You can recognize them right away in their dreadlocks and dirty feet in Birkenstocks.  But they’re essential in running this “show” that stays for just eight weekends…and then moves on to the next small town along with their horses, jousting costumes, elephants, Shakespearean slang, wizard hats, and of course, turkey legs!
