Pro Golf Career: More than Just Greens!

What do you think of when you hear the words “pro golf career"?

To most people, a pro golf career brings up visions of lucrative golf games played by people like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson or Vijay Singh. A professional golfer is much more than a top player in the PGA, though.

Pro golfers occupy all aspects of golf. These people are teachers in your local golf college, administration in golf schools all over the world, workers in pro shops and coaches on the greens. The definition of a professional is an individual who specializes in a particular field or occupation, usually indicated by a certain level of expertise or quality.

In order to become a golf pro, a person needs a few years of training. Then he or she becomes a registered apprentice, and following that participates in the PGA Professional Golf Management program. This four-and-a-half year course at the PGA’s university teaches everything a person needs to know to have a successful career in the golfing industry.

  • Head golf professional. Usually the owner of a PGA recognized golf shop
  • Director of Golf. Manages all aspects of a golfing facility
