Where to Sell What You Make

Handmade items are coming back in vogue, partly because they are considered much greener and more community-friendly than items made in large quantities at large factories — often by underpaid workers in other countries. When buying handmade items, people know they are supporting an individual, instead of a corporation’s greed.
In other words, there is a market for handmade items if you are inclined to make things to be sold. For instance, if you enjoy making scented candles, you no longer have to be a big company in order to compete with large candle stores. There are numerous ways you can sell what you make, such as:
- On Etsy. Etsy is a popular website where third-party sellers can sell the things they make. There you’ll find an assortment of handmade goods, from jewelry to laptop sleeves. Etsy stores are easy to set up, the fees are reasonable, and you have a better chance of selling your stuff when everyone there is actually looking for handmade items.
- On eBay. eBay also allows you to sell handmade items, but in my experience there’s less of a market for it here. Many people are looking for other types of items on eBay — brand name clothes, collectibles, etc. However, if you can gain a following on eBay or if the things you make play into a particularly hot current trend, you should be able to sell your items here too.
- Local craft fairs. Although so much of shopping is online these days, don’t overlook the possibilities offered by local craft fairs and craft sales. Once again, the people who come to these events are actually looking for handmade items, which makes it easier for you to make a sale. In addition, these people are often looking to support local artisans. You may also find that you pick up repeat customers at events like this.
- Your own website. Don’t forget that it is important for any business — no matter how small — to have your own website. At first you may not attract many potential customers with your website alone, but in time that could change. Also having a website enables you to refer past or potential clients to your site, which can help you make a sale or generate repeat business.
If you have a knack for making things, you should definitely consider selling them. There is a growing market for handmade items right now, and a variety of places where you can sell what you make!
